Have you ever created a vision board for yourself?  How about creating one with the whole family?  A vision board is a place to display whatever you want to be, do, or have in your life.  It helps you clarify, concentrate and focus on your dreams and goals.  If you consistently visualize the things you want in your life, you will manifest the life you dream of!  Now, of course, visualization is just part of the process. You also have to work hard on your mindset, be patient, positive, and never give up to make your dreams a reality.

I had a vision board party with some friends at my house a few years ago.  At the end of our party, my husband came home with the kids and my six-year-old sat down with us.  My friend gave her some paper, and without any direction from us, she went to work cutting out pictures and words from magazines and pasting them on her paper.

I wasn’t paying much attention to what she was doing as I was entertaining friends, so it wasn’t until she finished that I stopped to look at her vision board.  She nailed it!  She had put pictures of Disney World, cookies, and words like love and family fun.  She also included a picture of the two of us and told me it was because she wants to spend more time together.

I had never talked to my daughter about vision boards but she knew how to create a vision board because she has seen my vision board hanging above my desk.  It was validating to know that by working on my personal development and self-care I am having a positive impact on my children.  They really are watching everything we do.  What more reason do you need to take care of yourself and make your health and well-being a priority?

Why family vision boards are important

Seeing my daughter do her own vision board gave me the idea to create a vision board as a family.  Teaching kids from an early age to set goals and visualize their future will set them up for success as adults.  I want my kids to know that anything is possible with patience, perseverance, and positivity.  I want them to see their parents working towards their goals, and I want them to see our successes and failure as well as experience their own.

Two years after we created our first family vision board we took our trip to Disney World, a dream we had talked about for several years. They got to see and experience that we are working hard to build successful businesses that allowed us to pay for our trip to Disney World!  A year later we still reminisce about that trip.

Here are a few reasons why you should create a vision board with your family:

  • Encourages your children to dream.
  • Promotes positive thinking and perseverance.
  • Allows children to express their interests and watch them evolve over time.
  • Holds the family accountable for spending time together and working towards their goals.
  • It Sparks conversation about family interests and creates an opportunity for discussion.

What do you need to create a family vision board project?

  • Bulletin board, foam board, or poster board
  • Magazines
  • Computer & printer to print anything you can’t find in magazines (not a requirement)
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks
  • You can also let your kids dress it up with markers, stickers, and glitter

How do you create a family vision board?

There are no rules for creating a family vision board.  I suggest being open and flexible as your vision board develops.

Before you start, I would suggest sitting down as a family and writing family goals.  Check out this post to learn more about writing goals together.  This is a great starting point for your vision board.

We used our goals as the focal point of our vision board and then sat down with some magazines and cut out words and pictures that meant something to each one of us.  If we couldn’t find something in a magazine, we found a picture or typed the words on the computer and printed it out.

You can also create a vision board for a specific home project or vacation you are planning.  The vision board is a place to share specific colors, design ideas or elements, etc.  This post from porch.com shares how you can bring positivity to your bedroom with the help of a vision board

Vision board ideas – what should a family vision board include?

  • Family vacations or weekend getaways you want to take.
  • Books you want to read together.
  • Activities you want to do together (visits to the local farm, park, jump park, splash pad, bowling, etc.).
  • Extracurricular activities the kids are passionate about (sports, dance, gymnastics, theater, etc.).
  • Meaningful quotes that inspire you.
  • Words that you want your family to live by (kindness, respect, polite, trust, share, etc.).
  • Ways you can help others.

While we were working on our family vision board my six years old impressed me yet again when she suggested that we should help people by earning and donating money to others in need.   What a powerful tool a vision board can be!  And the best part is it’s a fun activity to do as a family on a quiet afternoon.

How do you make a 2023 vision board?

Now, more than ever, a vision board is crucial to helping both our children (and ourselves) with a positive growth mindset.  it will take some extra work to visualize and set goals, but I guarantee to do so will bring renewed hope for our future.  Use this experience to reflect on what is really important, what you are grateful for and how you can create a positive future for your children.

Our family had been reminded that things are really not what is most important. Our relationships with friends, neighbors and family have grown stronger than ever these past few years.  We have had more opportunities to do things for others, and while the pandemic had a huge impact on our careers, we have used this time to spend more time as a family and re-think our vision for the future.  Whatever your experience has been, I wish you positive visions for the future!
